Product/Tooling Design Engineer – Gilbert

The primary responsibilities of the Product Development/Tooling Engineer at Footprint are responsible for managing design, prototyping, and testing a product's development. These engineers assess the mechanical design properties of the product and determine if it has met the desired standards and functionality.


  • BS, MS or PhD in mechanical engineering
  • Excellent engineering analytical skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent design skills in Solidworks or MCAD
  • Strong FEA, fluid and air flow simulations in Ansys or Solidworks
  • Able to use JMP to perform statistical analysis
  • Ability to present to upper management with clear design process, design results and design rules
  • Strong customer service skills and time management
  • Excellent health and safety knowledge
  • Ability to collaborate and remain calm and professional in a fast-paced environment
  • A willingness to learn and work overtime when required
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License/ reliable transportation


  • Knowledge of plant safety, environment, and good manufacturing practices
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Good data recording ability
  • Strong math skills and ability to perform calculations as needed
  • Must be very detail-oriented and appreciate the value of accuracy

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide product design and design changes to support FP products
  • Provide prototype and production tooling design for FP products as needed in various equipment
  • Provide Finite Element Analysis as needed
  • Develop and validate design rules for tooling in various equipment
  • Develop method to support design efficiency and reduce design lead time
  • Develop automatic check list to check tooling design to improve design efficiency
  • Use CMM to measure tooling as needed
  • Create solutions to complex technical problems
  • Mentor other engineers on data analysis, tolerance analysis and finite element analysis
  • Act as bridge to collect learnings between tooling, product design, manufacturing and sharing learnings with other engineers in equipment/process group and platform
  • Be a design leader and influence other design outputs from design and tooling team
  • Attend all design reviews and provide feedbacks to the team
  • Perform extensive research and development during creation phase of technology
  • Inspect products and processes for flaws and identify areas of improvement.
  • Develop the DOE to find out the improvement of product design
  • Work closely with machine shop to improve tooling manufacturing
  • Work closely with manufacturing supplier to improve tooling manufacturing
  • Works as part of the team, communicates well with personnel at all organizational levels in a professional manner, and maintains a respectful work environment
  • This job does have exposure to water, pulp, and loud noises. PPE is provided
