Director, Research and Development Design Engineering – Gilbert

The Director of R&D Design Engineering is responsible for product and tool design projects delivered on time and meet all design requirements. This leader is responsible for solving any engineering issues that come up in a project as well as developing the overall concepts of new products and/or solving problems that may prevent their completion. The Director directs, plans accordingly, and spend time supervising employees in the departments throughout projects. A few of the main duties with this role is to collaborate with other departments to understand the commitments, answer technical questions, propose budgets for projects, train new employees, and work on continuous improvement. This leader must prepare reports on the progress of any project . The Director also owns the design process and design release process.

Qualifications

  • BS, MS or PhD in mechanical engineering
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in engineering field
  • Minimum 5 years’ of prior management experience

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to manage a team of engineers
  • Able to provide constructive feedback to employees and managers
  • Abe to make decision quickly
  • Good engineering analytical skills
  • Great attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Good design skills in Solidworks or MCAD
  • Able to use JMP to perform statistical analysis
  • Able to present to upper management with clear design process, design results and design rules.
  • Strong customer service skills and time management
  • Ability to collaborate and remain calm and professional in a fast-paced environment
  • Good data recording ability
  • Ability to deal effectively with time pressures, stress, and changing demands of job on a regular basis
  • Ability to handle highly confidential business information

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership of the team, guide it through the hurdles that will arise to success.
  • Ability to demonstrate technical leadership and understand the product and tooling design rules and drive the team and supplier to follow the design rules.
  • Ability to role model problem solving by using a 7 step or similar type of technical problem-solving techniques.
  • Create reports and provide updates on projects.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and customers.
  • Lead by example and be a role model as it pertains to safety, quality, and output behaviors.

  • Ability to communicate the status of projects to peers and both internal and external customers
  • Develop and validate design rules for tooling in various equipment
  • Develop method to support design efficiency and reduce design lead time
  • Develop automatic check list to check tooling design to improve design efficiency
  • Mentor other engineers on data analysis, tolerance analysis and finite element analysis
  • Act as bridge to collect learnings between tooling, product design, manufacturing and sharing learnings with other engineers in equipment/process group and platform
  • Be a design leader and influence other design outputs from design and tooling team
  • This position will support the factory as needed.
  • Perform extensive research and development during creation phase of technology
  • Work closely with machine shop to improve tooling manufacturing
  • Work closely with manufacturing supplier to improve tooling manufacturing
  • Works as part of the team, communicates well with personnel at all organizational levels in a professional manner, and maintains a respectful work environment
  • This job does have exposure to water, pulp, and loud noises. PPE is provided

Travel Requirements: 20% including but not limited to international travel
